Please explain Cummins software

Could someone explain exactly what is an incal file, what is a cal file, also what does repacker do. Sorry if it's stupid question but I can't find anything on Google search. Please be specific for us idiots thank you.

Thank you for the explanation! So if you re flash an ecm with a stock file, what happens to the truck specific settings? Do they automatically stay in the ecm? Or do you have to pull the file from ecm and overlay it with current incal file?

Before you do, always take what is called a ECM image. When you connect to a ecm insite will automatically ask you to create a "work order". When you create one, it saves a image of the ecm. This image contains all of the vehicle specific information and is very important. One you take the image, you can then convert it to a template under the work orders and images tab by right clicking the image and selecting "convert to template". After the flashing process is complete you can transfer that template to the ecm which will restore all of the previous vehicle specific data.
